With a Bachelor's degree in hospitality management and 15 years of front and back of house experience, I know the industry from, well, front to back. Always on the hunt for great places to eat, I understand the importance of getting small businesses like yours the recognition you deserve. After all, as part of an age-old industry, you play a much-appreciated role in keeping us humans fed and happy.
But humans are ever-evolving. I witnessed this long before moving to New Zealand, watching the rapid rise of veganism across the world.
It wasn’t until I moved from my hometown in Finland to Invercargill, that I adopted the plant-based diet myself. Lactose intolerance was what pushed me over the edge, but with all the benefits of plant-based eating in mind, I eagerly accepted the challenge.
Vegan eating couldn’t be that difficult, right?
Well, yes and no. See, I found that cooking vegan can be a lot easier (and budget-friendlier!) than most of us expect. And I noticed how many omnivores are interested in switching it up with a healthy vegan meal too. Turns out a simple, creative vegan recipe can sweep anyone off their feet.
But I also experienced that eating out as a vegan was a challenge in my new home in the South Island. And I love eating out!
The challenge wasn’t caused by a lack of interest from the hospitality sector. Questions came pouring in from chefs, staff, and owners I met, about how they could liven up my meals. How I’d suggest not putting the egg in eggs benedict. Whether making vegan nachos is essentially just the same as opening a bag of corn chips.
This got me thinking. How could I best help the industry I love so much while also helping all those vegans out there looking for great food?
Long story short, that’s how Veganise It was born.
